Nice way of showing a series genre [DONE]
Well, looking for some info on the net I found this way of showing how much of a genre a series have. One of the main concerns about genres for a series is that you don't know how much of a drama is (as an example). The reviews can help you a little to know that but as I don't trust reviews and I don't want to read them before seeing the anime I think this is an interesting option.
The matter is dividing 10 points between the different genres so you give more to the main genre of the series. See the result in this Review.

Thats an interesting idea, and actually I like it.
Problem is what about the animes that have (for example) 10 different genres listed for it. You'd end up with all genres only getting one point, and in the end it wouldn't tell me much about it anyway. Granted it should be rare, I'd think, for an anime to have 10 genres listed for it, if not down right ridiculous. Perhaps use a % instead? Or I suppose it would end up much the same.
And ultimately who would decide the point or percentage weighting?
Definitely a neat idea though.

I like that idea as well, but...
What about animes that deal with three different genres very intensely, compared to others that pick up elements from two but don't get serious with either?
Regarding the decision making, maybe this could be done in the reviews. When an anime is first added, a preliminary list of genres is assigned. Reviewers can select a list of genres with percentiles or points (as in the example site) and post these together with their reviews, and once at least three reviews are approved, the average point/percent genre distributions replace the preliminary list.

hm,
I think this might be a good idea.
the question is which way to implement it.
3 possible ways:
a) sort the genres by their importance
b) assign a percent value to each genre according to it's importance
c) assign an importance rating from 1 to 5 to each genre
d) ...?
i like c) best atm as it not only allows to show how the genres are distributed in an anime but also how the anime compares to other animes.
i don't see how that could be done with a) and b).

I`m also for the importance rating (c). Even though I like percentages more, I don`t like the idea that it should end up with 100% - since you`ll have to divide them. If a series has a lot in 4 different genres, you cannot give them more than 25% each, which doesn`t show how much of that genre it has, just that it`s evenly divided.
So I`ll run for the importance rating with 1-5. Although I`d prefer a 1-10, based on the voting system. That way you won`t be using many different systems, which would make people confused if you have to deal with different ones.

How about a voting mechanism for the genres, everyone can vote for what they think the appropriate genre(s) are. Then you can show the number of votes each genre received as a rating or scale of the importance of each genre. BUT, use only the top few (3) for searches and genre sortings.
This has the following advantages over the current system:
1) Mods do not have to get involved in changing Genres, it is determined by vote.
2) It weeds out useless genres because of the voting, only the top ones show up in the searches.
3) It gives an importance/popularity ranking to the genres, so you can get a relative importance
4) It is independant of what genres are available (to add or remove genres is a separate issue)
Possible implementation:
1) There would be a new page to vote on each genre for each anime (user votes 1-10 for each (for consistency with other votes), but does not HAVE to vote for every genre. These values are stored in a new table.
2) The Anime's page would be changed to show the relative importance of each genre based on the votes. In the event of ties, I guess each tying genre also gets added even if it is more than the number allowed.
3) A periodic script would run that would calculate the top genres for each anime and populate the existing genre table. This would allow filters and searches to remain unchanged.
All existing genres could be converted over as votes of 5's, so we do not lose information.
Anyway, just a slightly different idea for consideration.

Or rather combine this with (c) - every day (or after every voting) recheck voting average for each anime-genre combination and according to result set weight to this genre:
average 1-2.5 -> 0 weight (genre not listen with this title)
2.6-4 -> 1
4.1-5.5 -> 2
5.6-7 -> 3
7.1-8.5 -> 4
8.6 - 10 -> 5
Than genres can be showed according to its weight (importance) and for searching can be add field (minimal height for genre).
First initial vote for existing genres would be than 6, but remove this automatic vote after first user vote (it could be fast method for dropping unneeded genres).

The existing elite ass-hats (= mods) are anyway in charge of deleting utterly useless reviews already, that's no new group of ass-hats, mind you
Anyway, I think the voting (even if restricted to a smaller group of people) may be useful in many cases of dispute, and - more importantly - automagically take care of the %-values suggested already.

Restriction - user must have watched all episodes for title, to vote for genre.
Voting may be useful to set weight for genres. It's easier to set bunch of genres for titles, but setting which of them matches title more, and which less is depend more of personal opinions. Then voting for genres will be rather like questionnaire. To avoid some stupid voting number of automatic votes set at first can be increased (maybe 5 or 10), to compensate too fast changing genres by first voting user (remove automatic votes after 5 users votes), and do not count new genres for title if number of users voting for them is below 5.
And mods-power can be still used for removing strange voting or adding 1000 automatic votes to compensate, if voting for genre give strange or stupid results (like Vampires genre for AMG).
