Hint Factor for prequel/sequel [closed]

Post by Gambit »

I was wondering whether the AniDB Hint took prequels/sequels in account as well. Last time I voted a 5 for Those Who Hunt Elves, but the Hint List still showed Those Who Hunt Elves 2 pretty high on my Hint List. Is there a delay which didn`t process my vote yet to take that into account with the list, or is it just that the sequel/prequel isn`t taken into account when making the list?
If that`s the deal, then I`d like the Hint List to give those sequels a bit of a disadvantage, since you didn`t like the other one (usually the prequel). After all, if you don`t like TWHE, why would you even bother grabbing the sequel?
The only problem here would be an 'alternate' version, like Tenchi OVA and Tenchi Universe are. Universe is not a sequel, while it does feature the same characters. I guess those should be treated the same as a normal anime since they don`t have much more in common than the characters. The story can be completely different.
Any feedback on this?

Well according to exp, it does not work that way. Also, from my tests, anime hints appear to be generated run time (you can change a vote and go back and see a difference). But there may be a couple of explanations:

1) If the people that you have a similar profile to voted for the prequel, it is fairly likely they also voted for the sequel, and it was on your anime hint before.

2) Maybe the people you have a similar profile to thought the prequel was not that good (like you), but thought the sequel was better and gave it a higher rating, in which case the sequel would move up in the ranks.

3) Since you now voted on the prequel, there may be more users that match your profile with at least the minimum weight, and it is likely these people also voted on the sequel. People could have voted 6 on both the prequel and sequel and it would improve the score for the sequel. This has to do with a problem with the current system where a lot of moderate votes can get higher scores than one with a few high votes. I have a proposal for addressing this in: Make anime hint factor in temporary votes.

If you want, you can revoke your vote and play around with it to see how things change with your vote. My guess is if you vote 4 on the prequel that will make the sequel much lower (but may change other things as well).

anime hint does not take anything into account besides anime votes.
no relations, no mylists, ...

and as anime hint is very slow already i don't feel like adding more checks atm. a complete rewrite would be needed, but i have no idea how to do it better :P

Note, it's perfectly possible in most voting systems for a change in your personal preferances to have the reverse effect on the final outcome:
