Allow upload of PNG files [DONE]

At the moment you can upload GIF files but you can't upload PNG files (I get an "illegal file type!" error).

This doesn't make any sense as, given the same picture, the PNG file would be smaller than the GIF because of the better conpression.

I second that. I had to convert png images before uploading several times.

I also think this is a good idea.

I think that exp wanted to support IE that doesn't handle well png files. Don't know aniDB numbers but I've seen that IE is more than 80% on all cases so not taking in account that would be stupid IMO.

I think if M$ is too stupid to add good png support that should not stop us from adding it to AniDB.

PNG is there to get rid of the .gif copyright problem. All good browsers support it. So if the "bad images" will "force" users to swtich to one of those browsers I am all for it :)

Besides I can't understand why anyone would still use IE. No mouse gestures = bah.

I couldn't live without navigating with my right mouse button and a drag to the left to go back. Everyone should do that. Also supported in Firefox and Mozilla!

And IE nourishes browser-exploits, viruses and worms. Bad browser. Bad monopoly. Bad M$!

^^;;

Well, this is not a discussion about browsers and like it or not Mozilla based browser don't account in most of the cases more than 20% of the user base share. Making a site incompatible with 80% of their users is just plain stupid, even if you're an IE hatter. I think most people should put that aside when discussing usability, or you want an MS lover to ask for VBScript support because 80% of the user base support it?

Get real... this site is for everyone to use it, so you should observe some compatibility guidelines, like it or not.

was - the gif-patents (or - IIRC - rather those for LZW) are either gone already or about to expire.

That's true, but "not handling png well" mainly refers to the advanced features of it, namely the alpha-channel. IE properly displays PNGs since a long time, just only as long as it doesn't use transparency (see libpng.org).

So for images that don't this feature (like in this case ^^), png is ok to use with IE.

Palette-based transparency (i.e. one color in a paletted image is declared to be transparent) in PNG images is also supported by MSIE. The only thing it doesn't support is alpha-channel transparency -- even tho there is code in IE that allows the display of alpha-channel transparency! :roll:
