currently there isn't.

Maybe add a "official" column to the animetitle table, that way one of the anime titles (regardless of type/language) can be marked as "official".
Aka, this way the official title can be Kanji, Greek or any other language but doesn't force you to enter an extra title.

Well, IMO, the "Original Title (Japanese, romaji)" is the title under which the anime was broadcast in Japan - so it does not necessarily have to be Japanese. If the Japenese TV stations broadcast it as "Gunslinger Girl", that's the original Japanese title in my book... :?

The problem is the "romaji" part, not the "Japanese" part ...

Or for each anime, have a link to the true Original Title, since Japanese is not always the main title.

I doubt that any Anime has "Japanese" as title :D

Like exp said, at the moment there is no way to set the "Original" title as the one that shows up in your mylist. If I am correct there currently is no option to choose anything at all concerning the title, or is there?

Also I don't quite understand what bbaab meant by "the Romaji part is the problem" - why would any set of characters be a "problem" if those are in fact the correct characters the title is composed of (might they be greek, russian, japanese, thai, whatever).

I think PetriW is right - the easiest way to implement "Original" Titles would be to have a DB entry telling which title (jap, kanji / jap, romaji / romaji / whatever) is the "Original" one - a simple pointer.

I agree with Elberet that picking the title for each Anime would be a nice idea, since I usually tend to like different titles - for instance I hate Saikano or anything with "Ultimate Weapon" in the title because it lacks some of the original meaning of the full japanese title - on the other hand for "Kare Kano" I like to use the abbrevation, not "Kareshi Kanojo ...".

So choosing which title is displayed on a per anime basis would be on my personal virtual wishlist at the moment ^_^

By the way I just wanted to point out that over the last six months AniDB as well as AniDB-o-Matic have gotten better and better. It's really great to get something new every couple of weeks and actually be part of the design process. Feels like beeing part of a team ^_^ though I don't actually do any work on the DB itself.

As of 0.4.6 I only use the web interface for anime relations and notifications, so be assured those will be implemented soon!(tm) :D

Profile -> Language Preference: Default title type. You can set it to "Japanese (Romaji)", "Japanese (Kanji)", "English" or "Other"

He wants it different for each anime series.

I know, I mainly wanted to reply to the "If I am correct there currently is no option to choose anything at all concerning the title, or is there?"-part.

On the topic itself: I fear that the idea of the "official title" is confused with "the title most of us are used to"... after all, none of the Official Titles (Romaji/Kanji/English) is less official than another.

If the fansub-group decides to name it "Mujin Wakusei SURVIVE", 'we' will accept that as the official title, even though others would argue that "Uninhabited Planet Survival" is 'more' official... so there may be a use for ones personal per-anime-setting - though it indeed feels like overkill, but IMO not for any global (=different for each anime, but for same for all users) setting.

[Nonetheless, a global value/recommendation could then be derived from the majority of the individual settings.]

No confusion here.

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/anime/survive/ -> official title is "無人惑星 サヴァイヴ"

Other examples ...

http://www.planet-es.net/ -> official title is "ΠΛΑΝΗΤΕΣ"
http://www.gunslingergirl.com/ -> official title is "Gunslinger Girl"

and so on ...

Essentialy, I'd like to have an "Official title" field which doesn't say ANYTHING about the script or language used. It just says that's the title which the makers chose.
