sound quality rating [DONE]

sound quality rating for files (maybe only modification to "sound stream lang" icons):
-mono/stereo (different icons)
-low/hi bitrate (color/tip)

imho hi video quality + mediocre sound quality is worse then mediocre videoq + hi soundq.

hm,

i think the audio bitrate + codec provides enough information to judge the audio quality in most cases.
and if the audio quality is really bad that would be a good reason to lower the overall file quality rating and maybe add a comment to that file.

I request sound quality rating for animes at anidb.net website.

I have too slow (128 sync) connection. And it takes much time to get sound quality parameters by eMule. So it would be good for me to see sound quality rating without dl'ing anything.

PS: I know that my situation is rare enough... But imho smth made for easy use by deprived ppl is good enough for others use.

As well as exp I think this can be obtained from the current information. Maybe we can have an additional icon as the eye-cancer one being hear-cancer?

There are people who think it`s already 'earcancer' as soon as it hits 128, so I wouldn`t do that. I also think showing the audio bitrate should be sufficient to determine whether an anime has good, bad or mediocre sound. After all, that determines the quality of the audio, so if you just look at those values you`ll know whether it`s good, bad or ugly. No need for an extra icon imo.

Maybe but audio quality isn't always corresponding to the bitrate... it the source is bad, even though you use 320 kbps, the sound will be shitty!

but whatever, I don't think an extra icon/flag is THAT much usefull that it must be added.

Well, that is happening with a DVDRip I've downloaded this week. Man, the sound is awfully encoded. It's distorted and has a lot of hiss, even while using 128Kbps OGG, so you can have bad sound with a good quality bit-rate. I think he is speaking about these cases... just a few I think.

By example one Stellvia episode had some weird noises and so a v2 was released, but v1 is still on list. Shouldn't the file be marked as hear-cancer?

Honestly, I'd prefer if there was the option to vote on the quality of both audio and video for all users, not just the person who added the file. I often enough set a quality rating and as gambit pointed out that might be biased towards something others don't agree to at all (though I now and then ask other people on IRC what rating to choose).

So if you choose to revamp the system then you might add this option so that if all users can simply press a button to vote (or choose two dropdowns and press a button) then it would not take ages to update all anime with this new information.

I don't like/don't think will be that useful to have audio ratings. I was talking about an indication for files that have 'audible' problems like hiss, scratches or oversaturated audio, just that.

Crazy idea: Replace the stars with a smaller indicator that takes up about the width of one full star (e.g. full/blank bars). With the extra space, add two new quality ratings and rate video, audio and subtitles separately...

That would finally give us the option to vote on "mass naked child events" ^_^

Idirectly this is already done via the group rating - and I also have been pointing out that voting on subtitles is moot because there is a difference between DVD-Rip subs and Fansubbing Group subs.

We should not touch the current system concerning subtitles.

I think adding an option to mark a file "earcancer" is the best idea I have heard yet - just to indicate if some file is really not standable/has audio errors, while the video itself is ok.

The easiest way would be to rename "eyecancer" to "eye/earcancer" because either way nobody would want such a file. No need for further additions, just a possibility to warn others.

actually all ideas i've read here so far will probably be denied.
there's just no real use for them.

about the earcancer indicator, if the sound is really that bad the file should simply be selected as eyecancer, bc after all the quality rating is the "overall" quality of the file, not just the video, it's just called eyecancer but would apply to audio quality as well.
