Hi folks,
today a file was added to Inu Yasha that obivously had a bad CRC. The person who added it did not notice that there already was a file with the same size but other CRC (thus other ed2k) and that the file had a "CRC correct" mark, which means this is the official file. The person added the new file to AniDB nonetheless.
I asked in the DB Change Request forum to delete the file - and wahaha said it would be better to just mark the file as invalid. Which is right in my opinion. Though it got me thinking.
When I finally got fed up with only adding anime to the DB that I CREQed (meaning that I checked every file first if it was valid and with CRC correct or at least unchecked, and if not all files of a series were correct I would not add it) I simply ed2kdumped all my files with the help of AOM. After a while I did not even open up my mylist anymore for when a file had an entry in AOM, it would be labeled "white" which means this file is in AniDB. What I forgot was that the file might very well have an invalid CRC and to my dismay I found that Aquarian Age EP2 and 3 had an invalid CRC (though that was debatable).
Problem is: I did not double check. AOM did not point the invalid state out to me and neither did AniDB. The only way I could have found out is if I ed2k dumped my ed2k links and then clicked at least 4 times to get to the respective file (mylist, anime letter, anime title, file entry to pop up the whole list of files for an anime).
I would therefor request that AniDB should simply change the color of a file name in ed2k dump to _RED_ if the CRC of that file is bad. I also would like to have Chii on IRC add a comment if I dump an ed2k to the channel that the file I just named has a bad CRC.
Of course I will also post on the AOM forum that I would love for AOM to report the bad CRC to me too everywhere.
This way files with a bad CRC are less spread. At the moment there is not enough feedback about this, and every file with a bad CRC that is spread results in wasted bandwith and wasted media it propably will be burned on.
Thank you for your time ^_^
