Sorting Genres [OLDREQ]

How about the ability to sort genres?
So that you can indicate whether an anime with, lets say Drama and Action, has more Drama then Action or more Action then Drama.
Two anime with the same genres can be so very different, like Patlabor and Getter Robo, both have Drama and Mecha, but patlabor is definitely a drama-anime with mecha's while getter robo is a mecha-anime with some drama in it. :)

I think there's already a discussion going on whether genres should have their own rating, i.e. Anime X = Comedy (10%), Drama (20%), Scifi (20%), Mystery (50%).

That would be cool.
But sounds harder to implement, with the "hint" feature and all.
Just sorting them, putting Action over Drama if the anime has more action then drama, sounds easier.
for now anyway :)

Well, no, from the database's point of view it's exactly the same, whether you order them or track percentiles.

That's true for a human being, since it's easier to say that "Onegai Teacher" contains more Romance then Comedy, then to give exact percentiles for the two genres. For a database, however, it doesn't matter whether the numbers it stores are sort orders (how else do you think can the DB be told that OT has more Romance then Comedy, if not by assigning a number to each genre?) or percentiles or number of votes...

Here's my random thought on genres:

Some of them seem much more important than others. For example, "Action" seems a lot more important than "Martial Arts", which is basically a sub-category of action. My suggestion is to have major genres and minor genres, which could even be given a different name, like "Subject Matter", which seems more appropriate. Major genres would be the classic movie genres - Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Horror, Hentai, Kids, and possibly SciFi. You could only assign an anime one of these. Minor genres would be things like cars, demons, vampires, magic, mecha, school...maybe even have the major genres in here so you could have things like Romance with some Comedy, although that seems a bit unnecessary to me.

One idea among many, I know.
