About special cut or extended versions (dvd- vs tv-versions)

Post by wahaha »

One of the reasons why I post this is that I'm no longer sure that using specials in case of [Do Something] ZX Shinseiki Evangelion Director's Cut EP 21f is the "best" workaround as we currently have three different options to create a workaround for "mutliple versions of the same episode".

So, generally, there may be files containing different versions of the same ep - how should those be handled?
1) Use an (oh-so-mighty ^^) special and add/move the files there.
2) Use the un-/censored-flags
3) Use file-comments
...or:
4) Add another state to "censored": "extended version", and interpret the existing "(un)censored" also as "(un)cut".

To be honest, I'm all for 4) ^^

Chalk me up for file comments, in this case.

but i guess i could also live with #3. though i prefer 4.

I guess i can throw that in here as well:

i have a serious problem with the uncesored/censored icon... what to do when the r1 release is censored, but the japanese one not. lets make an example the japanese version of shaman king is not cut (i refrain from calling it uncensored), but the r1 release (at least the first one) is censored. assuming someone adds both releases to anidb whats the correct way to set icons?
- set r1 release to censored and leave r2 normal
- set r1 release to censored and set r2 to uncensored
- leave r1 at normal and set r2 to uncensored?!

http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?s ... .id=126242

afaik the us version was cut while the jap version is unchanged.

Well for your question Deridiot, imho, it would be best to just add the Censor tag to R1 release files with a comment that the R1 release was censored, and leave the Japanese ones alone. AniDB is always based on the R2/Japanese release and always takes precedence over any other region releases. If the Japanese released is "normal" then there is a need to indicate otherwise if another release is censored. If someone was wondering why a file had the censored flag and not the others, a user would just have to look at the file comments. It would state something like, "The Region 1 release was cut while the R2 release was uncut." If you want to go really really far, you would mark all the R2 fansubs uncensored and there would be no confusion, but I doubt we want to go through all that trouble. If a R1 release differed greatly from the R2 release (i.e Cardcaptors and DBZ) then a new anime entry with "(U.S. version)" would solve that problem.

As for the problem you addressed in the topic wahaha, I'm for creating a special. Solution 4 seems good, but it is hard on users to sort through all those files just to find the "extended version", and chances are newb users wouldn't even know there is an extended version, so a special would be a strong visual indicator. There is no need for another state/flag imho.
