Reviews: Discouraging instructions [OLD REQ]

Post by Elberet »

I just noticed that there's already a review for Soukyuu no Fafner - Dead Aggressor, even tho that series is ongoing and at this time a whopping two episodes old. The author did say that he would update the review over time, but in my opinion such a review is still utterly useless.

I don't want anything to filter such reviews or spank the users who submit them, but a simple note above (or below) the submit form saying something like "We don't want reviews for incomplete series! Only submit a review if you've seen the anime completely!" I hope that this would be discouraging enough so that people think twice before hitting that submit button.

(As I wrote in Give review ability only if an anime is finished,) I'm in favor of adding a flag to distinguish real reviews from those of ongoing shows, in combination with some special handling (e.g. seperate page, no yes/no-ratings, not counting their votes towards the average), but basically allowing them.

yeah exactly my thoughts.

I despise such reviews. If I had the power I would walk around on amazon.com and bitchslap everyone who rates DVDs, Books and everything before they become available.

Hell there were people who voted for the Spiderman 2 DVD even before the movie hit the theaters. Later on you are unable to find out if the review was written before the product was abailable and can't find out whether the person actually saw it.

Those folks who write "I did not see this product but..." aren't even the bad ones. It's the people who write a PREview and do _not_ tell you that.

Well, you know what? Maybe they've seen the rip from the theaters' DVD masters that were leaked two weeks before the premiere... ;)

Yeah, that makes them know how good the DVD menues are, the extras, the additional audio versions, the subtitles, the case, the wrapping and of course whether the person who put the DVD in the shipping box had good and dirty sex with his girlfriend that morning.

Now why the hell don't they tell me the dirty secrets about that person? I mean they can make up stuff about a st000pid DVD but they can't tell me any lewd horny stuff that I might _actually_ be interested in?

;););)

I`d prefer a 'preview' button instead. That way people can write a preview for ongoing series or new series which will give an indication about the series itself, the quality and whether it looks promising or another unoriginal ripoff you`d better leave to rot on the `Net.
When the series has finished and all fansubs/dvdrips are out, you might receive a message that the series has finished and because you`ve written a preview, you can now write a review for it (of course this is kinda useless when people also add raws and fansubs in different languages than English).
But anyway, I thought the preview-option was pretty useful. As soon as the person submits a review, the preview will be deleted automatically.
What to say about that?
People won`t complain about people who write reviews before the show is completely out/fansubbed, while there is probably a group of people who could appreciate a preview before downloading a show.

IMO, that's what the description should be used for. ^_^
Anyway, I like your suggestion, even tho it sounds like a lot of work for something minor like this. Wahaha's suggestion to flag reviews as previews and display them on a separate page sounds like a more reasonable and easier to use idea.

A description doesn`t give any info about the pace of a story, character design or even the animation quality/style. That`s something I consider different ;)

PS: And stop posting, I need to go and you keep replying to my posts :P

Well, you're right on the last two. Descriptions shouldn't contain the little details. But pace of the story, that's something that definitely belongs into a good description in my opinion. However, that might be because the story is the most important thing in an anime for me, so a description that provides some background on the story is a much better decisive help then a preview on the character design. :)
