True. 'Adult' as a genre would not be descriptive enough -- many consider extreme violence and such to fall under 'Adult' category anyway; it'd be too confusing.

Why not just leave it unchanged...
...or how about renaming the genre 'Sex'?

Hmm, seeing how everyone is all over the place in this thread, I think I'll try to sum up things discussed thus far...
  1. Definitions:
    1. Erotic: Giving sexual pleasure; sexually arousing
This is the very definition of what hentai is all about which distinctly distinguishes itself from ecchi.
    2. Ecchi: This anime features panty-shots and situations with "sudden nudity". Almost always used for humor. Ecchi does not describe actual sex acts.
    3. Pornography: Creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire
  2. Terms Discussed:
    1. Hentai: This term is obviously understood by most people to contain animated works of sexually explicit acts. However, this is a degrading term and is not a true representation of the genre because not all hentai have sexually explicit acts nor always invoke major sexual arousion (many are just plain, boring, and bad).
    2. Adult: Obviously not a very good choice because it could drag in other unwanted non-H anime.
    3. Mature: Like the term Adult another bad choice because it too could drag in other unwanted non-H anime.
    4. Pornographic/Porn (or any other itteration): Refering to definition of pornography in section 1, this is not a good choice because hentai is a genre of anime, thus claiming it has not artistic value is inaccurate.
    5. Hentai (Adult): In my opinion, that's just saying the same thing as keeping Hentai as the name for the genre. However, it could be acceptable to change it to Adult (Hentai). However, this term is still somewhat confusing because the term Adult is mentioned first which could potentially confuse some users (since they didn't bother to read what was in parentheses).
    6. Ero anime: Aside from extreme anime fans or otaku, this term would create too much confusion.
    7. Erotic (Adult): For myself, the term 'Erotic' would be sufficient, but to prevent confusion with the genre ecchi, Adult should be provided in parentheses. I believe this is the most straight-forward, short description that describes the current genre named hentai. Everyone associates the term Erotic with sexual pleasure and if they are still confused (if they somehow find ecchi anime sexually pleasing) Adult is provided in parentheses. Plus, it doesn't include the use of the term hentai which is not a fair term to represent this genre.
  3. Proposed Solution:
I suggest using Erotic (Adult). This is a term that can be clearly understood by everyone and doesn't use the term hentai which can be misleading.

Use for what?

We have three groups of animes that are relevant to this discussion:

- Animes that depict nude flesh or sexual intercourse.
- Animes that do or do not fall in the above category but deal with some kind of perversion or fetish.
- Everything else.

The third category needs no further discussion.

The second category is the group of true "hentai" animes where the term "hentai" is interpreted in the original way, derived from the same japanese word.

The first category needs to be divided according to how much nudity and/or sex are actually shown. The "ecchi" genre describes animes with mild nudity, up to and including corny dialogs or visual references to sexual intercourse. It does not, however, cover any animes where it is actually performed in length or a penis or vagina are shown (even censored). Hence, at least one more, so far unnamed genre is required for this category.

Now, as for that new genre's name... Whether it's "adult", "mature" or "erotic" is of little significance. All three words mean more or less the same. However, in the English speaking world, the term "adult movie" is normally equivalent to "porn". It definately is an euphemism, but one that everyone uses - so we should use it too. If it works for movie rental shops and ANN, why not AniDB?

Bottomline: Animes wit lots o' fuckin' in 'em are of them there Adult genre. Erotic works too. Maybe even something as blatant as Porn (at least that'd be honest). Just stop bickering about those details already. -__-;;

Since hentai is 50% of the database, let's split it and create hentaiDB.info ;)

Alternative names: nude, sex, explicit content, erotism, XXX, love, ...

Try closer to %16 of anime titles. If you go by episodes or files the number would be much smaller.

As much as "adult movies" is often used to describe porn, renaming the genre as "adult" would make it less accurate than the current "hentai".

The official definition of "adult video" is: May contain explicit sexual scenes and/or violence.

It doesn't have to contain sexual themes, violence is enough to qualify. ...and renaming the genre as "adult" would bloody well be confusing to those of us who know the correct definition.

Either leave it unchanged, or use "erotica" instead. If it's good enough for Amazon.com, it should be good enough for AniDB...?

Just use pr0n, with this we can tell l33+-dudes from normal people, who are likely to try to correct the spelling...

Let's hope Amazon did not patent erotica... :)

I would prefer: H (erotic), and leave hentai as subgenre (only for some extreme titles) to it.

Just leave it as it is, the alternatives all stink imo. And I have no problem with the term 'hentai' myself.

My suggestion for genres:

Ecchi: nudity, pantyshots, naked breasts etc... no real sex at least nothing visible. Ex: Love Hina, Green Green, Onegai teacher etc...

Ero: Sex, there might be some little kinky stuff (bondage, light fetishes etc..) but nothing really perverted. Ex: futari ecchi, Green Green Erolutions etc...

Hentai: perverted and sick sexual acts (rape, incest, torture, tentacle etc...) Ex: do I really need to give you examples? :P

Using these three levels should be sufficient IMO.

That makes a lot of sense, and I think is used already in Japan. In fact IIRC Green Green Erolutions is cataloged as Ero.

WTF is the point of this discussion? The current system works just fine and everyone knows what it means.
