[ALL-REQs] Categories (new genre system)
Moderator: AniDB
With utmost details. You mean something like this?:
Characters::People::Assassins::Battousai::Kenshins::Rurouni Kenshin::Rurouni Kenshin in time of Meiji Restoration::Rurouni Kenshin between 10 and 99 killed::Rurouni Kenshin between 15 and 16 kill::Rurouni Kenshin between 15 and 16 kill drinking tea
As one main reason for the new category system is to provide a base for a much improved version of the anime hint feature adding such information as category data is indeed a very promising idea.ArchiiE wrote:What i would like to see is a "character development" genre. Love these series and they're so hard to find! What i mean is series like Hunter X Hunter and Naruto, were the characters keep developing and learning new skills / abilities. This would be a GREAT genre. :D
However, I don't think Genre:: is a good place for that.
I've added a new root-level category Dynamic (the name suxx, we'll have to find a new name for it once we know what leaves it has) for now.
There are probably more things like character development which we should place there.
BYe!

Characters::Animals::Turtles
Love hina, Mutant Turtles: Choujin Densetsu-hen

And maybe some another:
Settings::Objects::Buildings::Tokyo Tower
Destroyed in every second action title
And moved there:
Settings::Objects::Vehicles::Ships
Settings::Objects::Vehicles::Planes
Settings::Objects::Vehicles::Cars
And another like this:
Settings::Objects::Weapons::Swords
Settings::Objects::Weapons::Guns

Regarding the newly created category: Dynamic
I would rename it to Features
and then I'd put some items like these in there:
Features::Evolving Characters
Features::Static Characters
Features::Stereotype Characters
Features::Twisted Plot
Features::Multithreaded Plot
Features::Fillers
Features::Recaps

Well, the different types are as all attributes here not meant as a yes/no indicator, but as an indicator of how much any of these applies:
So if there is an anime with the two main characters evolving (eg. from hate into a relationship) and all other characters staying as they are through the whole series and some of them being the "dork", the "shy-one" and the "big-boobed-fanservice-lady", that anime would get some stars in each feature.
But now to some examples:
abenobashi:
static:2.5 (allmost everybody exept...)
evolving: 1 (Sashi)
stereotype: 1.5 (MuneMune, Utas, Gandpa)
love hina:
s 2 (suu, kitsune, motoko, haruka,..)
e 1.5 (keitaro, naru, mutsume?)
t 2.5 (suu, motoko, kitsune, seta, naru, shinobu, tama-chan,...)
saikano:
s 0.5 (only some very limited support chars)
e 2.5 (chise, shuuji, sempai, allmost all support chars)
t 1 (chise)
ebichu:
s: 3
e: 0
t: 0 (1 if you take kaishounachi for a stereotype of a slacker)
dragon-half:
s: 3
e: 0
t: 3 (you could argue here that the stereotypes here are not the normal anime-ones, but more disney-like, but I'd still call them stereotypes)
ping pong club:
s: 2.5
e: 0-0.5
t: 2 (teachers, perverts, iron lady)
Ok, you might get the idea. of course exact ratings would be as difficult to figure as with any other entry in the genre/attribute-system.

I agree with them being called anthro thats much more clear but i think they should be considered peoples much more than animals.Andemon wrote:How would anime such as Meitantei Holmes or Night on the Galactic Railroad fit in those categories, though? I don't know -- something about 'half beast' doesn't seem quite right for that.Raptor wrote:

Calling them anthropomorphic animals is mainstream, so I suppose the category name should be based on that. ...but it's quite a mouthful. Should be shortened a bit. Characters::Animals::Anthropomorphic? Characters::Animals::Anthro? ...
Characters::Animals::Furries? ...eh, I dunno. -_-;
and if there are half beast that cant be considered peoples well they might as well be in other categories because thats really not the same thing. If i want something like hyper police then i want anthro not some kind of half beast roaming the lands.
Someone already added Characters::Kemono. That translates as beast, but if I'm not mistaken, it's also used for anthros..Raptor wrote:I agree with them being called anthro thats much more clear but i think they should be considered peoples much more than animals.
[EDIT]
...and now someone has renamed it Characters::Juujin. I have absolutely no idea what that means. -_-;
Anyway --
new categories:
Setting::Place::Train
Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru, Ginga Tetsudou Monogatari, Saishuu Chikan Densha,...
Characters::People::Delinquents
School Rumble, Yu Yu Hakusho, GANTZ... (many others)
Seems like my mylist is pretty well covered now -- can't think of any other new genres. Maybe Setting::Place::Town, or Setting::Place::City::Tokyo -- or is that too much detail?
Could it be possible to see all anime in category + subcategories? Like when I click on Nudity, I can see only stuff that is assigned to it in general, and not the subcategories (which are imho lol but anyway...). I'd like to see all of it. Still I don't think it can replace the former ultimate Ecchi genre completely, without mixing Hentai into it But better than nothing
Hmm, maybe change
Genre::Thriller
to
Genre::Mystery::Thriller
Genre::Mystery::Thriller::Horror // Genre::Thriller::Horror
depending on if people agree with me that thriller should be under mystery
I also miss Ecchi Genre::Ecchi anyone?

imo, yes. it does, so that would benwa wrote:Does horror fall under thriller?

Genre::Thriller sounds good enough for me. It's one of those hard-to-place genres -- I mean, there's action thrillers, mystery thrillers, horror thrillers, political thrillers, psychodrama, erotic thrillers,... ...but most movie sites list it as a main genre, separate from horror and mystery. It's sometimes listed as subgenre of action, though.
...anyway, new category:
Genre::Drama::Angst
Evangelion, Pretear, Princess Nine,...

I think ecchi now falls under Content Indicators::Nudity.
Another category:
Characters::People::Mystical People::Goddess
Oh! My goddess (OVA, movie and TV serie)
Characters::Mystical Creatures::Devils
Devil Man (OVA's and TV serie)
Characters::People::3-eyed People
3x3 Eyes, Mitsume ga Tooru, Dragon Ball (Z)
And shouldn't there be an apart category for Ghibli like:
Genre::Drama::Ghibli or
Genre::Fantasy::Ghibli or just
Genre::Ghibli
