remove hentai from anime hint? [DONE]
Moderator: AniDB
sothis: Yep, thought that would be the case from your reviews. Oh, and looking again I do have one hentai anime on my hint - Kite is number 50.
The surely, this is indicative of a larger problem with the Hint, that merely filtering the Henati wouldn't help. It seems to me that anyone who has completely avoided a particular genre shouldn't be having thier list flooded with it. Especially seen as a majority of tiles have less than 50 votes and a rating of less than 7. Now unless sothis by pure chance has happened to have similar taste in other anime to one of these 50 (probably all the same people), something seems very odd to me.
I swear the hint used to be better before it was fiddled with, now I don't have more than ten things in my list that even vaugely interest me.

yeah, that's actually an interesting point. the series that i've voted for the most are horror and sci fi, and barely any of those show up in my list, probably because i've plowed through so many of them. however, these are the ones i'd want the most!
indeed, most of the things on my list are genres that i dislike, such as hxh/shaman king type adventure/fighting, or hentai, or sports.
definitely an interesting problem.

well,
there are tons of interesting information one could use to come up with anime suggestions.
however under performance aspects many things are simple impossible.
and this is also a very time consuming area to fiddle in.
if someone is good in perl and wants to help out with the anime hint coding, maybe we could work something out.
just PM me.

I've had years of experience with Alexandria Digital Literature, which uses rudimentally similar system for story recommendations, and I can safely say that generating recommendations outside of the genre that user normally reads (...erm, in this case, watches...), is not a bad idea. There have been tons -- and I mean tons -- of folks over there who have first claimed that the recommendations are inaccurate, because they dont like genre "X" (...romance, for example...) and yet there are several such stories on their recommendations list; but then have later read one of those recommendations, and found out that they actually liked it -- even though they thought that they hated everything in that genre.Rar wrote:sothis: Yep, thought that would be the case from your reviews. I don't see why the same wouldn't apply to anime, too.
Lot of folks are prejudiced towards certain genres, but that shouldn't mean that they shouldn't get recommendations from those genres. Little diversification is always good; one might be pleasantly surprised of what they find outside of their preferred genres...
'course, such genres shouldn't be -- as you said -- flooding the recommendations. If the recommendation weights are set correctly, then there is *no* need for excluding genres. The Hint is still a new feature, and doubtless requires some more tuning, but that suggestion doesn't help to that end.
i will agree that having certain genres in the list for non-biased reasons... i am totally open to having sports and adventure things in my list, because i very well might enjoy them.
but when it comes down to straight old hentai, i don't want to watch it, period. i am of the inclination that hentai = porn, period (i know many don't agree with this), so i'd just rather not have it in the list at all.

Err... why else than when the anime hint thinks you might actually like this or that hentai would you visit such a page and find it amusing?
If you ask me, there should be an option to mark anime hints so that they won't show up again (and in a way there is already, by voting "1" for that anime).
This way we could also get rid of things that might not fall in the hentai category but still are not wanted by a user - let's say you get a hint to watch "Hikago" next and you simply think go is totally stupid, then you could mark that so that it won't show up again.
In the end we are talking about stuff that you think you won't watch _ever_ and that we need a way to sort those out of the anime hint without actually voting for them since that falsifies the anime rating (you did not watch that anime so how could you vote for it or it's quality compared to other similar anime - you do not watch such anime).
After the lengthy discussion about "kick users who vote 1 for anime" I guess suggesting to vote 1 for anime you don't want in your hint list is kind of irritiating... and wrong.

It's just that, if the recommendations are truly accurate, the user who thinks like that is plain wrong, and is missing out on something good simply because of prejudice towards certain genres. In the end we are talking about stuff that you think you won't watch _ever_ and that we need a way to sort those out of the anime hint without actually voting for them since that falsifies the anime rating
This discussion happened occasionally on Alexlit forums; I suppose the proposed solution would work here, too:
Allow users to mark animes that they don't want to watch, but make it so that it doesn't totally remove the anime from the the users recommendations, just 'devalues' it -- ie. decreases its score by four hundred, or so.
Hence, it can still potentially appear on the list someday, if it gets better score somehow (...new matching users, votes, etc...) -- if it does, it should be a big hint to the user that he should at least *attempt* to watch it. ...or he can devalue it another time. His choice, of course.
Even if it is only temporary vote?Skywalka wrote:After the lengthy discussion about "kick users who vote 1 for anime" I guess suggesting to vote 1 for anime you don't want in your hint list is kind of irritiating... and wrong.
Maybe adding another voting rate can help: without number (in database it can be zero or negative number), described something like 'i dont want to see this one title in my hints, but it doesnt mean i rate this title low' and do not count such votes for average rating (use this one only for hinting).
again, guest, i don't see that argument relating to not wanting to watch hentai because you might actually like it. i see nothing entertaining or interesting about watching porn in any context. if you are just talking about other genres, i'd understand, though.
voting a 1 definitely works, but i feel (like skywalka mentioned) that it would really degrade the rating system. if a series only has a few votes, what then? the score would be lowered a substantial amount, which may influence people not to watch it.

Funny, I see nothing entertaining or interesting about watching sports in any context. So, if this filter gets implemented, I'd like to be able to apply it to any genre I chose, not just "hentai".sothis wrote:again, guest, i don't see that argument relating to not wanting to watch hentai because you might actually like it. i see nothing entertaining or interesting about watching porn in any context. if you are just talking about other genres, i'd understand, though.
And, as I mentioned earlier, a reverse filter would be nice, too. Hentai is under-represented in my "anime hint".
The problem is that there is actually really BAD pr0n out there and some that has a somewhat decent story (you know that bad joke about women who think at the end of a porno movie there will be a wedding but that is not what I mean )
Take for instance "Angels in Court". I really like that one because it has a somewhat similar story like "Great Teacher Onizuka" but in a really cheesy way. But the drawings are good, the animation is good and not bumpy like in so many other hentai where you can virtually count the frames while watching it. The story is also arousing in a non "just show primary and secondary sexual attributes and that'll get anybody horny" way)
So I gave it a rating of 6 or so, while I think most other hentai ovas and movies are plain and straight a 3.
Of course there are people out there who vote 8 to 10 like maniacs for everything with tentacles i it but since I would give those anime a whopping 1 I will never get an anime hint for this.
In the end, I might be hinted to watch another anime like "Angels in Court" that has a little bit quality compared to all the hardcore stuff out there and that way the anime hint would stay useful.
In the end, guys like porn, and it's not a good idea to simply tell every woman (like sothis ) to just vote 1 on everything hentai so she won't see it anymore. I guess about 80 to 90% of the users on anidb.net are male so I think that would really ruin the anime hint feature for everybody.
I mean with 30.000+ users there already was a raging discussion about ten or so people voting 1 for Naruto
