Preferred Language in Preferences [OLD REQ]

Post by spankydam »

Hi EXP

As most feature requests are in response to itches, here's something that came up today that I figured you might like to scratch if you feel you have the time :)

Idea is something to be implemented in the User Profile - call it a 'Preferred Language' option with a drop-down box linked to the list of currently implemented languages.

A couple of checkboxes would then allow the user to select to turn on the preferred language option, and also to hide or show those unsubbed.

The idea then would be to use this as a filter against the calls to the database so that when any list is displayed of anime titles only those meeting the preferred language would be shown, along with unsubbed / undubbed results if that option is selected.

So in other words, if I'm looking for the latest episode of an Anime that has come out, and my primary language is English, then by selecting this option I would only see those subs that have been added as English, while subs in German / French / Spanish / Chinese etc would be hidden.

Doubtless the other guys here will chop me down about this, as I can already see a few pitfalls that might need discussing, but all I can do is make the suggestion and hope someone smarter than I am fixes the holes.

Hope this kind of made sense... Spanky :D

The biggest problems are probably:
  • How complex may the rules become?
    Preferred:
    - Only japanese dub with english sub
    - Japanese dub with english sub or english dub
    - Japanese dub with english sub or with german sub or with french sub or german dub
    ...
    While it's easy to make such a preference-setting, I don't know how it'd perform on the anime-pages.
  • How should external subs be treated (since they're currently not associated with the raws)?
  • What about Korean Animes? Most preferred-settings would probably not show any files there.
  • Does it break the caching?
  • To meet all eventualities when hiding entries, one would need some kind of "(really) show all"-link.
(Like "Three more files: no group (Image/Image), no group (Image/Image), no group (Image/Image)", as suggested in the the "deprecated files"-thread)
