New types of ratings: Complexity and Otakuness [DENIED]
I think it could be useful to be able to rate animes based on the complexity of the story and their "otakuness", ie. how easy it would be to watch if you haven't watched that much anime. This could possibly also be used for the Anime Hint feature.
For "complexity", the lowest end of the scale would be slap-stick comedy, while the high end would be something like a mix of Lain and NGE.
For otakuness something in the low end would maybe be DBZ and Ghibli films (imo), nd the high end would be Excal Saga, PPP and such.
It would work the same way as rating an anime does now, just two extra kinds of ratings.

Complexity would be a nice thing, yes ... but I wonder if that`s worth implementing, since that rating already would be complex to capture. Resulting in people rating it low because they enjoyed it, or too high if they enjoyed it as well (since they didn`t understand the complexity
)
Besides, does it really add to a certain rating in, say, a review? imo the complexity shouldn`t make a rating higher or lower - that`s already covered in the story/enjoyment.
But I do like the complexity rating, just not sure where to put that. It would be a bit weird to make it a standalone rating like 'vote' and I wonder if anyone would even consider it useful then.

Well, I still think genre ratings would be sufficient to solve this. A complexity rating of 0% would be about the same as Genre "Entertainment 100%", and complexity 100% is implied by high ratings for the genres Drama or Romance.
But nevertheless, I must say that a second rating, sort of a mix of complexity and "otakunes", would probably make sense - not as a vote, but as a property of the anime, just like the genres themselves: Intensity.
It's sort of a combination of complexity and otakuness, wrapped up in a term that newbies can understand, and describes how touching, depressing or dedicated a story is. For example, in my very subjective point of view, NGE would rate a 7, End of Eva an 8 and "Now and Then, Here and There" a 9, while on the other hand "Tenchi Universe" gets only a 3. I hope these examples help to get my idea across.

What do you mean? Unless the rating is determined by votes or some overly complex method, adding one field to the anime table and an edit box to the add/edit form is all there is to implementing a new rating. The problem, of course, is that only the owner of the anime entry or Mods can change that rating, so we'd probably have tons of discussions in the Change Req forum whether a particular anime is complex or not.

I could live with that. Then again, has it any other value but a rating in the review? Or do you want a seperate value for it being displayed on the anime-page itself ?Elberet wrote:Perhaps. But in that case they should be purely informal and not influence the rating. Even a slapstick-style comedy anime (otakuness and complexity = 0) can be so good that it deserves a pretty high rating...
Not really. Kidan suggested that reviewers should be able to rate the otakuness/complexity when submitting a review and I argued that these two shouldn't be calculated into the average rating of the review because a "0" in otakuness doesn't mean that the anime is "bad" in that category.gambit wrote:Or do you want a seperate value for it being displayed on the anime-page itself ?
In other words, the two values would be shown beneath the reviews just below "Enjoyment", but they wouldn't change the "Avg Rating" value.
After rethinking this, I'd suggest to not implement it this way.
First, a good review should describe the character of an anime, including how complex (i.e. hard to follow), thought-provoking, emotionally touching and demanding (regarding prior knowledge of japanese history, culture or animes in general) it is. Also, a numeral rating just doesn't cover these factors in enough detail then a verban description.
Second, both suggested ratings are highly dependant on the genre. A sci-fi / mecha / action anime is in 9 out of 10 cases not emotionally touching at all, not very complex and hardly thought provoking or demanding, while a romance / drama anime is bound to be touching and probably thought-provoking. If there's really no way to live without these ratings, an "intended audience" rating would be more useful.
