Indicate difference between sub- and video-quality [done]

Post by wahaha »

I don't have a clue where to put what kind of option to tell people: "Hey, this is near DVD-quality, but the subs are worse than an automated translation" (aka HKDVDs). I just decided to go for "medium" as overall quality in case of KareKano...

It might become interesting to choose among stuff like "worst subs ever", "bad subs", "average subs", "great subs" to rate font types and sizes, subbing effects, amount of extra subs (explanations and translation of signs/letters/sound words) and of course translation quality (but only to a limited extent ).

Feel free to deny that idea ^^ (especially if I overlooked any similar previous requests)

Hmm ... sounds as an interesting idea. I completely agree with you to make a seperation in video and subs, since I also decided to just choose 'medium' when the subs suck, but the video is excellent HQ. But that makes it a little ... unfair.
I have to say that people should be able to make this sub-voting option optional, since not everyone knows how good or bad subs are. There are still people out there who think AJ has good subs 8O
I suggest options like:
- Very Good (excellent translations)
- Good (I think it`s good translated)
- Medium (few typo`s)
- Lousy (lots of typo`s / bad translation)
- HKdvd (subs from HKdvd)
- DVD (subs from DVD)

Another slight problem I`m having are old series like Slayers, MKR, etc. Those are already kinda crappy on the DVD (I heard) since they`re that old - so you can even see blocking during the episodes (or the people who did Slayers and MKR ->A-G, AA, SSX<- did a terrible job on ripping) and stuff I call glitches.
I always rate those series as 'medium', but other people rate them as Very High, since it`s as close as the DVD - but it`s still extremely crappy quality imo :)

Now I wanna ask, is it okay to choose High Quality, or better go for Medium, since the DVD was crap anyway.

Another idea:
What`s the 'viewability' of a font.
Because some groups choose lousy colors or fonts to add to the anime. Like white subs without any border when the anime itself is pretty bright - or blue subs when the anime is most of the time in the air (also blue, hard to read).
Or just the subs like P-A, so thin that you have to force yourself to read it when watching from a distance.

I think you could rate those as well.

hm,

are we talking about voting here or just an additional field @ file info?
i.e. having an additional subquality dropdown?
btw. i think "viewability" of the subbing font should simply be taken into account when specifiying the overall subing quality of a file. No need to have an extra option/field for that, IMHO.

about the video quality rating @ bad source.
i would always vote such files by the resulting videoquality. In this case that would be medium. Who cares if that file is as close to the original dvd as it gets if it is still bad Q, why should it be marked HQ?
if there are no other files added for an anime/ep with more than medium quality ppl would just see that they can either get those med. quality files or none at all.
you could add a little info to the description field of the anime though, telling ppl that they should not expect high quality files bc the source it that old.

BYe!
