A way to differienciate hard - soft subs [OLD REQ]

Post by naki »

I've seen i in the request summary, but in the status unknown. I'm one of those who greatly appreciate the advantages of softsubs.

- choose your own font
- choose your own your subtitles color
- choose whether you display them at all (I'm studying Japanese)

But know I have little choice downloading every different version of an episode encoding which is not AVI to check if the OGM or the MKV containers contains the subtitles in soft form or if they are hard version in the video.

It's a bit a waste of bandwidth for me and the people I am downloading from. I would be really happy to see a feature allowing to see if the subtitles are hards or sub (maybe a slightly different flag ?).

Thanks for your time and the wonderful AnimeDb,
your otaku

It's usually quite simple.

If the file is an OGM or MKV then it's probably soft subs.
If the file is an AVI or RM or VIV etc then it's probably hard subs.

'Probably'

I've downloaded an .ogg with french subs before for a less common anime, becuase I thought I could turn thier subs off and put mine over the top, and was very annoyed to find they were hard coded in.

PetriW, thank you for the answer, but unfortunately it is not that simple.

For example I have many OGMs that are hard subs (look at the anime_fin ogm files for instance).

And I have AVIs that are soft subs (with external .srt).

I also have OGM that are softsubs plus Japanese and English soundtrack (I *never* use the English soundtrack on anime, it's like eating soba noodles with ketchup ;)

As you say, it's -probably-. But -probably- can be quite frustrating when you get ogm/mkv releases which take a week or more to download, only to discover that it is a hard sub, buried deeply into an otherwise neat encoding :,(

By the way, there is no way to differenciate AVI/OGM/MKV before actually opening the file detail, which makes it a bit unconvenient when there are 12 or more different releases.

I'd just like to save a bit of everyone's bandwith and AnieDb's ressources (less "blind" clicks).
