You're not the only one who's unhappy about it.

I'd be less happy with rizon, but moves elsewhere have been wiggled around in channels.

well,

I too am not in favour of rizon.
And as notoriously slow as we are when it comes to IRC network changes, I don't think it's likely that we'll get everybody to agree to a move until the current network dies completely :P

Though if we'd find two people who'd be willing to provide us with access to servers where we can run our own irc network, that might be an interesting solution.

If there's only about 50 people at most on the server, I've got a private server that I could convince the admin to let us use.

There's often a hundred in #anidb alone... so that's a bit more than 50. ;)

well,

server load and traffic would be very low for an anidb irc network.
The key point is that not all ISPs allow the hosting of irc servers.
And we'd also need shell access to the servers in order to install and administrate the irc server apps.
We'd probably offer an SSL encrypted port too, but most of our users would not use that, so the additional CPU load should be minimal.

So basically the requirements come down to:
- hosting ISP allows irc servers on their network
- linux server
- we can get ssh shell access as a normal user (root not needed)
- server needs at least one IP with an unused irc default port (6667 TCP)
- we need two servers
- it should be a long time arrangement and servers should have relatively high availability

All in all it might not be that easy to find two such servers after all :P

My server doesn't quite meet requirements, although it's a nice box. Oh well.

Out of idle curiosity, why are you two (Der & nwa) against a self-hosted IRC server? (I'm not gonna argue for or against, just curious.)

Why bother with our own server when we can use the already existing ones? That means extra servers, extra maintenance and less users that connect to it, unless you want less users...

And I don't see how being on rizon would make us any more affiliated with fansubs than we already are, indexing them and all their files...

I got banned after a few seconds when I connected to the server yesterday. I could retry an hour later to no avail, but now it seems like I'm completely blocked. I only have a standard mirc installation, and haven't got a clue what it is the server doesn't like?
