Remove // Characters: Mystical Characters: Tentacles
Can a tentacle be an actual character?

Remove // Genre : Action : Sports : Everything but Driving
I really don't think we need to specify what kind of sport is it. The title of the anime or description always covers that part. Driving has sub categories that are worth keeping though. If someone's looking for sports anime, he can just search the Sports category, which doesn't include enough series to require subdivision in my opinion.

Add // Characters : People: Kids
Add // Characters : People: Adults
Not all children go to school and if the anime only has children, it should say so somewhere in the categories.

Move // Hentai : Sexual Orientation to its own category, maybe under Characters.
This category can apply to all series that have any kind of love story or ecchi. Shouldn't be limited to hentai.

Add // Setting : Place : Village
Add // Setting : Place : City
Add // Setting : Place : Campus

Specify // Since you removed "Near Future" I think it would be useful to specify if the Time category weight should be higher when the future/past is further away from present, or if the series -only- happens in that time period, always set it to maximum weight.

For example someone added "Shinseiki Evangelion Future *"

I usually use the time weight as an indicator of what percentage of the series happens in the past, future. There should be a set standard before we end up with having to correct hundreds of entries.

/me sends TechNiko back to the start of this thread as well...

At the moment people are fighting against trees as hard as they can, trying to reduce categories to just whether or not such-and-such an anime contains a 'cup of tea' in it, rather than actually thinking about what the purpose of more detailed categarisation is. Sure, it's easier to 'spot' objects, or 'kids', in an anime than usefully break down its content, but it really isn't much use then.

Maybe also move
Setting::Place::Space::Shipboard
as
Setting::Place::Vehicles::Spaceships
Defeats the point of the hierarchy; it looks like I'm really going to have to wake up and make some proposals soon or there'll be major damage done in my absence.

I'm missing Characters::People::Princesses
and perhapps Genre::Ecchi::Fanservice would be a good addition (for those very cheesy anime, you know what could be put here ;) ).

hm, in response to Kidan's suggestion, how about making Princesses into a subcategory of Characters::People::Royalty?

Which leads to the next suggestion: Characters::People::Aristocrats
Since the population of the aristocracy is considerably greater than that of the royalty, they are more likely to be adopted for use in animes of the historical genre.
Examples: Gankutsuou, Rose of Versailles

And on the same topic,
Characters::People::Clergymen or Clergy
Example: Chrno Crusade, the only anime I can think of right now whose main characters are of the holy order

As for the setting...
Setting::Places::Buildings::Palaces
Example: Again, Rose of Versailles meets this criteria

Characters::People::Monks
Characters::People::Priests
Characters::People::Nuns

Maybe some common category for them all could be used, but i have no idea, what it can be named (my engrish is not rich enough).

Characters::People::Housewives

Lots of hentais need this category :oops:
--
Also i think some more order can be made in Characters::People (it is already long, and it will grow). I would place here groups:

Characters::People::Students (leave it as is now)

Characters::People::Professions
- Astronauts
- Cops
- Detectives
- Hunters
- Maids
- Musicians
- Nurses
- Reporters
- Scientists
- Teachers
- Waitresses
- Magicians
- Monster Trainers

Characters::People::Villains
- Assassins
- Pirates
- Thieves

Characters::People::Warriors
- Ninjas
- Samurai
- Soldiers

Characters::People::Aristocrats
- Princesses

Characters::People::Special
- Delinquents
- Futanari
- Virgins

Characters::People::Aristocrats
- Princesses
Princesses are not part of the aristocracy; they're royalty. In Britain, the peerage is comprised of Dukes/Duchesses, Marquesses/Marchionesses, Earls/Countesses, Viscounts and Viscountesses, and lastly Barons/Baronesses. The French also had similar titles in the Ancient Regime. But I do not think it would be wise to delve too much into the aristocracy, since that would require extensive research into titles from all over the world, both past and present. The royalty would be a much safer bet, I think.
Characters::People::Monks
Characters::People::Priests
Characters::People::Nuns

Maybe some common category for them all could be used, but i have no idea, what it can be named (my engrish is not rich enough).
They belong to the clergy.

If not as main genre, than rather under drama: Genre::Drama::Adventure. Looks like Genre::Drama is a trash (or nice place) for such minor genres.

Setting::Place::Buildings::Shrine

ok i need a few workmonkeys as i seriously can't do this alone. Less because of the workload (which is already enough to kill me 3-4 times), but for the lack of knowledge.

i started what finally needs to be done: the categories wiki page. yes i know we are still far from a final solution of all categories, but it gets confusing by now and especially since categories is now open for everyone this needs to get added rather soonish.

http://www.anidb.net/wiki/index.php?title=Categories

ok to give you a basic idea of how i thought this should get done:

first split it into the parentcategories

Categories:Audience
Categories:Genre
and so on...

next split it further if neccessary, but normally it stays on that level.
Genre is an exception as the wikipage would be way too long unusable if it stayed all together

to give some examples:
http://www.anidb.net/wiki/index.php?title=Categories
http://www.anidb.net/wiki/index.php?tit ... s:Audience
http://www.anidb.net/wiki/index.php?tit ... ries:Genre
http://www.anidb.net/wiki/index.php?tit ... re:Fantasy

if everyone adds a few short descriptions for every category we could get this done in the next few years. hey we might even be faster done than aom 0.6 ;)

ehm anyway. now go my workmonkeys >D

--------
Genre::Action::Adventure (we can always move it around if someone believes it's wrong there)
Setting::Place::Building::Shrine

edited:
--------

Characters::People::Clergy::Nuns
Characters::People::Clergy::Priests

Characters::People::Professions::Cops
Characters::People::Professions::Cops::Special Squads
Characters::People::Professions::Detectives
Characters::People::Professions::Housewives
Characters::People::Professions::Hunters
Characters::People::Professions::Hunters::Bounty Hunters
Characters::People::Professions::Maids

Characters::People::Professions::Musicians::Band
Characters::People::Professions::Nurses
Characters::People::Professions::Reporters

Characters::People::Warriors
Characters::People::Warriors::Ninjas
Characters::People::Warriors::Samurai
Characters::People::Warriors::Soldiers
Characters::People::Warriors::Soldiers::Pilots

Genre::Ecchi::Fanservice
kinda wrong imho
ecchi is part of fanservice and not the other way around. fanservice can also be somethign else than ecchi stuff, but mostly it is. anyway i see no need for that as ecchi covers it already.

while i'm at it. someone explain to me the difference between

Genre::Ecchi::Breasts::Boing (holy shit who added the balloons to the girl)
Genre::Ecchi::Breasts::Gigantic Breasts (?)
Genre::Ecchi::Breasts::Large Breasts (big)
Genre::Ecchi::Breasts::Small Breasts (flat-small)

gigantic breasts seems unneccasary to me or do i miss something?

next point
Genre::Drama::Real Life
Genre::Drama::Day to day

thats quite confusing to me as i considered that the same. atfer discussing it with ultima and wlah we came down it's the same, but with the difference being realism.

Code: Select all

[ 22:36:44 ] ?[ @Ultima ] actually I think slice of life replace those two categories..
[ 22:36:58 ] ?[ @Ultima ] dynamic -> plot ->
[ 22:37:16 ] ?[ @Ultima ] information pertaining to the realism should be placed there
[ 22:39:27 ] ?[ @Ultima ] currently there's epic/episodic, those pertain to the fashion in which the anime is presented
[ 22:39:47 ] ?[ @Ultima ] twisted on the other hand defines the situational content of the plot
meaning first merging both into

Genre::Drama::Slice of Life

and then adding/changing

Dynamic::Plot
Dynamic::Plot::Presentation::Epic
Dynamic::Plot::Presentation::Episodic
Dynamic::Plot::Twisted
Dynamic::Plot::Realism

and yes that very open for discussion thats why i post it :P

* puts the thread in sleep again *

I agree with you in almost all.

- I would keep only Flat, Normal and Large breast. I don't think more distinctions are needed.
- I like the usage of "Slice of Life" as a replacement for both those (Real Life and Day to day).
- And as I don't care much about the plot categories NO COMMENTO from my part. :P
