[ALL-REQs] Categories (new genre system)
Posted: Wed May 11, 2005 4:38 am
Let's make this the official thread for requests concerning additions, renames, moves and deletions of categories for now.
For anime such as Tactics.
Definition from Wikipedia:
Contemporary fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy, also known as contemporary urban fantasy, modern-day fantasy, or indigenous fantasy. These terms are used to describe stories set in the putative real world (often referred to as consensus reality) in contemporary times, in which, it is revealed, magic and magical creatures exist, either living in the interstices of our world or leaking over from alternate worlds.
For anime such as Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu.
Space opera is subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes romantic adventure, interstellar travel, and space battles where the main storyline is centred around interstellar conflict and character drama.
For anime such as Outlaw Star.
...perhaps even Genre::Scifi::Aliens::First Contact, though I cannot currently think of any anime that would actually have that genre -- but there must be some, right...?
First contact is a term used to describe a first meeting of two previously unknown cultures.
Ditto for examples. I'm sure that there are some, though -- it's a common setting.
A dystopia (or alternatively cacotopia) is a fictional society, usually portrayed as existing in a future time, when the conditions of life are extremely bad due to deprivation, oppression, or terror. Science fiction, particularly post-apocalyptic science fiction and cyberpunk, often feature dystopias. Social critics, especially postmodern social critics, also use the term "dystopian" to condemn trends in post-industrial society they see as negative.
...and just because I recently watched Dead Leaves:
Hm. That's all for now -- gotta go to work. I'll probably think up more later, though. -_-;

Just a couple of ideas
genre::fantasy::dungeons and dragons
and maybe change genre::action::sports::football -->

I do not agree with this one. Cloning is not something special at all. We will have cloning in real life in the next decades. Do not create a genre for this one.
So let's add:
So let's add:
genre::action::military::American Civil War
And same for setting::time::past::historical::
sjabbie wrote:genre::action::sports::american football
something for jobs, for anime like Yakitate Japan.
And could you hide the hentai genres list for visitors and children?

I'm glad people are getting a little enthused about this at last. If you can just all remember a couple of things:
-only suggest categories that would have some relevance to the anime as a whole
-only suggest categories that are found in at least a handful of anime
Idealy, if you can provide a few examples of anime titles that you think would go in each one, this would help. So, to expand on my mecha tree:
.|- piloted robots (Gundam, ad infinitum)
.....|- transforming robots (SDF Macross, Transformers)
.....|- combining robots (Z Mind, KO Beast)
.....|- animal shaped (Boukyaku no Senritsu)
.....|- bio robots (Neo Ranga, Eva)
.|- power suits (Bubblegum Crisis)
.|- cyborgs (GitS, Gunnm) (humans with mechanical parts)
.|- androids (A.D. Police, Boku no Marie) (robots in human shape)
.|- little robots (Doraemon,
.|- aircraft (Lightning Trap, Coo)
.....|- fighter planes (Macross again, Yukikaze)
.|- cars (Riding Bean, Initial D)

Ok I'll give some examples. Amour gave some good comments on some of my categories so I'll leave almost all of them out. And for the ones I couldn't find an example, ditched them as well.
Zipang, Full Metal Panic, Higan, Jin-Roh
Genre::Action:: Sports::American Football
Eyeshield 21 (It's the only example I think, but it's all about american football)
Let's and Go
Arrow Emblem Grand Prix no Taka
Appleseed, G.i.t.S, You're Under Arrest
Chobits, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Full Moon wo Sagashite
Genre::Fantasy::Dungeons and Dragons
Record of Lodoss War, Tales of Phantasia
Mahou Sensei Negima, Oh! My Goddess, Sailor Moon

Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. Fiction in the steampunk genre is set in the past, or a world resembling the past, in which modern technological developments occurred earlier in history, but were accomplished via the technology already present in that time period. The genre typically falls into the realm of science fiction.

rowaasr13 wrote:Genre::Fantasy::Creatures::(Everyone's Favorite) Shinigami
ha! I wrote "spirit" because I couldn't remember the Japanese word. Does "shinigami" include ghosts, hollows, poltergeists, specters, gidims, ...?
Posted: Wed May 11, 2005 6:11 pm
Description from Wikipedia:
"A shinigami (usually translated as "god of death") is an entity in Japanese folklore that is responsible for seeing to it that a person dies at his appointed time and subsequently guiding his spirit to be judged in the afterlife. In this respect, shinigami are similar to the Western concept of the Grim Reaper, and they are often pictured as wielding scythes. However, whereas the Reaper is thought of as a singular being, there are many shinigami."
...and btw, I'm all for creating Characters:: main category, as Elias suggested. That seems far more organized than what I proposed. (Characters::Mystical Creatures::Dragons seems better than Genre::Fantasy::Creatures::Dragons...)

I wouldn't call 'em creatures, but I don't think the exact tree paths are too important at this stage.
My pet one:
Escaflowne, Juuni Kokuki, El Hazard, Capricorn, etc ad infinitum.
Anything that involves transportation from earth, to another vaugely parrallel setting where there's some getting back or crossover issues involved.

this is getting ridicuous... soon, it'll take an hour to add attach categories to an anime
this would be the most detailed genre/category system ever created, though

You've never heard of Wikipedia?
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... 0&offset=0

I have 'heard' about wikipedia and I was speaking about categories/genres for movies or anime to be precise, not categories for the whole world
anyway, added the following categories so far:
Does horror fall under thriller?
