Go ahead. That's exactly what I'm talking about - if you need unofficial title, get yourself a new field without word "official".

I didn't mean new name, just change the current one.
And I still don't understand what's official about a translation.

I think if you really want to have the offical title, you should stick to the official kanji field, even thou if there might be official romanisations for some anime. Because actually there's no gain in information for the official romaji field. Thus I'd like to have this field renamed to common romaji title, too.

We will speak again when this happens. Until then I'd like to have my CREQs approved.

Silly idea:

Why don't we bug exp to add a little place for a screenshot of the official anime title depicted at the beginning of an episode? Only with this approach we can get the maximum out of the original typography.

Will I be able to insert those screenshots in filenames? Besides sometimes title screen have parts of name in very small font, so those screenshots would have to be hi-res and that would take some HDD space on DB's server.

How about, "You're the only person (so far) that cares about having titles in uppercase, and it's clear that most replying to this thread either don't care to have the titles in uppercase or don't see the need to change a whole bunch of titles in the database just to satisfy you perfectionist ego?" That clear enough for you? Stop insinuating that the mods do not care about the quality of the database. Like Dongato has mentioned before, this is an English oriented anime database.

As I have stated before, we should have a poll to see whether this type of change is really that necessary. If users don't want it (or care for it), why should we allow it? That is the point of this thread - to discuss whether it is really that necessary. Or is that also too much for you to understand rowaasr13? So far there hasn't even been 1 pro-reply for your changes from other than yourself. I know that you contribute much to AniDB, but that doesn't mean that majority will always agree with your ideas. Please lighten up a little. Shessh.

Start poll to see if correct change is allowed? That would be something new. Official titles are not decided by polls. At least when it is still AniDB and not PersonalPreferencesDB. I don't need approval of majority (as I've mentioned already - just try polling random forum, what's better some less known japanese title or popular english one and check the results later), I only need correct change approved. Or field itself changed, of course, so after it becomes "Common Romaji" I can fll new feature request for "Official Title (Romaji, Hepburn)" field. Regarding english, as far as I know it is anime-oriented DB with english interface. If it is indeed english oriented, then I don't understand why non-english languages subs/dubs/titles are allowed at all. And even if it were english oriented - I gave link to official english page for APPLESEED, so what's the problem?

You?

Tracker entry

BTW, I think rar's 3d option is the way to go. It's official and has the info you want.

Anyway... this will go down the drain as there is only one opposing the current wanted behavior of the field.

Good luck. When this change is implemented it will become "wanted". But not until then.

Eheheh, I always got the impression rows. didn't actually bother reading my posts. Easy to call someone a bad mod if you don't bother acutally taking any notice of them. I'll say it again in caps, as you seem unable to pay attention otherwise. I went to FIND ALL THE TITLES THAT ARE IN ROMAN LETTERING ORIGINALLY, AND WRITE DOWN THEIR 'CORRECT' CASE. For 16/18 of the 50 title sample, that was caps. But hey, I'm not dedicated enough to go an look at a few logos on websites maybe. Thanks for 'checking' my list for me o_O'

For everone confused by all this... it all comes down to two points really:
1) If you can say that a transcription has 'official' typographic features.
2) If people want a quite substantial number of titles in the db in caps.

On 1) it's basically the same argument rows. and I have been having for a while... which is I guess not really interesting or relevant to anyone.
On 2) I think the feedback here has made it reasonably clear that most people prefer not to have all caps titles, but rows. does. I suggest he does a quick toupper on his filenames.

I note rows. hasn't responded to the idea of option 3 at all... this still seems the most sensible to me. As 'official' does have some relevance to the japanese title, and making it clear that it was originally in roman letters is quite useful, seems the best way of handling it under the current system to me.

So, an example. Tattoon Master has the logo of the title quite clear in the anime pic, so lets use this.

Current System (Option 2)
Title: Tattoon Master
Jap. Kanji: タトゥーン・マスター

Option 1 (Rows. current)
Title: TATTOON MASTER
Jap. Kanji: タトゥーン・マスター

Option 3
Title: Tattoon Master
Jap. Kanji: TATTOON MASTER [タトゥーン・マスター]

Listing the furigana as the japanese title is certainly misleading, if you wanted to search for it in japanese, eg. on the AIC website it'd probably be given in roman. Should help make it clear what titles are actually in katakana, and which are roman with furigana.

And now to respond to some of the points that weren't childish foot stamping...
-DonGato, I'm not sure if 'common' is exactly right, but certainly some clarification for romaji (but more so for the japanese, which is currently always 'kanji' even when it isn't) is probably useful.
-kidan, I mentioned having a graphics field for title last time rows. got all purist on my ass. I am tempted to tracker it.

I like 3, but I still need formatted low-ASCII field to use in renames, as splitting latin/kana pair and cleaning up cannot be 100% automated. If it implemented, I'd just ignore "common" romaji in future, just as I do it with english most of the time.

Ok, to be really bitchy now: "TATOON MASTER" is written with small caps, so it's in question, if "Tatoon Master" wouldn't be closer... (nah, just kidding)
From this observation it should be pretty clear, that there is no way to achieve 100% correct information, unless you'd really include a screenshot.

For now I'd like option 3 as well.

*curses*

I like option 3 too - I still hate the person who allowed the change to "TEXHNOLYZE". I f'ing HATE capitals.
