Remarkable anime series/movies.. hard to find.. (discussion)

Post by Vladinator »

Indeed, been watching a lot of anime in the past years, and quickly I realised that finding remarkable animes like..

Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Figure 17, Last Exile, Elfen Lied, Read or Die, Shakugan no Shana,
Hellsing, Ergo Proxy, Black Lagoon, Speed Grapher, Juuousei and Solty Rei.

Also movies like Beyond The Clouds (movie), Pale_Cocoon (ova), Voices of a Distant Star (movie),
Tokyo Godfathers (movie) and plenty of more worthwhile and unique series/movies, if I can use the word unique. ;)

I guess personality has a lot to say when it comes what you like and what you don't though, I just want to help
out a bit with my list if you are unsure what you want to watch or simply don't got a clue what to get.

There are plenty more on my list, watched over 1000 hours of non-stop anime in total, and I usually picked out
the animes from the anime callendar, all from 2000->2006/2007. Recently I haven't found anything as remarkable
as my past experiences, Naruto/Bleach for instance are new, but they are only impressive in the beginning if
you ask me. Later on the story gets expanded way to much and.. I feel like I loose it's interest quickly.

I like it when emotions are involved in a series, also where the genre actually do matter. Not like many
"comedy" animes where you got the usual theme, 1 guy and many girls, some girl trips and you see a Bra or
something... making the anime into "comedy". Nope, not my style.

If you like, use this topic to maybe post top 5 of your most liked anime series (or movies), and share them with us.
I shared some of my most liked (not in the "correct" order though), so if you share back who knows.. maybe I
(and others) find something interesting to watch! :D

* Sorry about all the punctuations, maybe more coma and some dashes would have made the thread easier to read.
Might be also because it's 03:13 and I am going to sleep right away. *

Good finished series (no specific order):
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (interesting)
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion (different)
  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (cute kids beating each other to death)
  • Great Teacher Onizuka (unexpected)
  • Death Note (evil one)
Good one's I'm watching (no specific order):
  • Darker than Black
  • Dennou Coil
  • Lucky Star
  • Code Geass (so far so good)
Might be some more, but since AniDB is down at the moment that it for now.

Nice idea for a thread, i really want to watch some epic anime, but am finding it harder to track more down.
Five of the top which I've seen all the way through:
  • Full Metal Panic
    Black Lagoon
    Elfen Laid
    Fullmetal Alchemist
    Mutsu Enmei Ryuu Gaiden <-underrated
Currently watching (still airing):
  • Claymore <- ep 5-8 are the pinnacle of recent anime (set aside 2 hours for these).
    Seirei no Moribito
Some worth watching:
Akagi, Madlax, El Cazador, R.O.D (OVA and TV), Samurai Champloo, Welcome to the NHK, Rozen Maiden - Ouverture (may need to see the relations first), 12 Kingdoms (if only they had a completed story for this, then it'd really be epic).

Seems strange to me that so many people like Black Lagoon so much. It may be drawn well, may have good sound, and even very attractive characters (Revy is one of my favorite girls ever). but it lacks any story completely. How can it be put in "epic" category I can hardly imagine. But, to be not offtopic, here's my top6 (I can't make it top5, because definite places are only the first and the second, the rest are somewhat equal):
1. Noir
2. Shinseiki Evangelion + End of Evangelion
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Hagane no Renkinjutsushi
5. Great teacher Onizuka
6. Kenpuu Denki Berserk

Why not try some stuff from before 2000, like Slayers, Escaflowne, Utena, Fushigi Yuugi, Trigun, Outlaw Star...sure, the art isn't pretty modern CG, but that doesn't mean the stories and characters are any worse than what's out there today.

AH! My Goddess
DNA>2
Shuffle
Love Hina
Zero no Tsukaima

I seem to have a thing for romantic comedies.

Who'd a thunk it?

I'm getting ready to watch Tokka and Red garden, maybe they'll make the list.

Yup, the Kenshi OVA is a must! One of the first series/OVA's I watched thanks to an AMV ;)

Here are some series I find remarkable (no special order):

Serial Experiments Lain [mind f*cker alert! ;)]
El Hazard - Magnificent World [happy-crazy-fantasy-word]
Earth Girl Arjuna
Gasaraki
Jin-Roh - The Wolfsbrigade
The Soultaker
Blue Gender [I recommend this one to everyone who loves some combination of mecha, SciFi, Drama and a bit of horror]
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien [hm, all just about love :p]
Maze [comedy/dram in some strange fantasy world]
Aquarian Age [Mistery/action]
Area88 [fighterplanes vs fighterplanes... with some drama]
Boogiepop Phantom [Horror/drama/magic]
Genshinken [Adorable series about us: otaku's :)]
Kaze no Yojimbo [mistery/action/drama]
Mermaid Forest [Series of semi-independand stories, contains drama/mistery/fantasy]
PlanetES [Drama/SciFi]
Shingetsutan Tsukihime [Horror/action/drama]
Witch Hunter Robin [Action/drama]
Wolfs Rain [Drama/fantasy: a must see if you love drama!]

And almost all Studio Ghibli movies ;)

-Read or Die oav
-Haibane Renmei
-Lucky Star
-Gunslinger Girl
-Kino's Journey

I'll say that only three are really epic anime and the other two just really appealed to me personally. Although Read or Die is kinda borderline in my opinion.
