That's a horrendous waste, there are lots of older very high quality anime.

there is plenty good anime before 1999 if you cant find it then .. blerg!

etc... Don't get stuck on the year, use the Anime Hint instead to find cool stuff! Or just sort the anime list based on vote, filter out genres you don't like and get to it.
There is loads of quality stuff out there, just because it's old doesn't mean it's good. It's the good stuff that still gets a good vote, Naruto won't be all that popular in 15 years but most of this probably will have people interested still.
