Is this still supposed to be the case?
wget -S -O /dev/null
wget -S -O /dev/null --header "Accept-Encoding: gzip"

The latter returns a gzip compressed HTML document, the former returns it uncompressed.

Yeah, I've noticed that too, when developing my automation script. Unless I ask for gzip explictly, which I do now, AniDB returns uncompressed content.

awww, I will have to look into that.
It might be that the required modification got lost on some apache upgrade.
