hi guys!

i guess this has been asked several times before but i can't find any answer to this:

some files have audio language japanese and sub language english. that's fine, i understand that.

but what if it says audio language japanese, then audio language english and sub language english ??

how's it possible, that there are two audio languages? how come that the sub language is equal to the one of the audio languages?

These files indeed have two different audio-streams. Actually, it's possible to have even more than 2 languages in the same file.

For avi-files, it's a hack. It works, but you can only access the second stream when having special filters installed; a good player may support selecting the language in such cases.
For ogm-files, it's normal to have multiple languages. You can select them via the icon in the systray or via the player.
For mkv-files, it's also normal to have multiple audio-streams. Selecting one of them one works "with every good player"(tm).

In all such cases, the (english) subtitles are so-called "softsubs", meaning that they can be switched off.

Not always, much to my annoyance. There are quite a few .ogm files in AniDB which have only one audio stream and hard subs - silly encoders. Means I can't put other soft subs over the top.

I didn't mean to say that all ogm and mkv files have softsubs, but rather that all files with dual audio have them.
