There are usually different sources for CRCs... but which ones should be "enough" to be added as valid?
+ Filename
+ Group's homepage
+ IRC-Topic
+ Lists of distro-xdccs
+ Envirosphere
? appended .SFV-file (How to know if they were selfmade or official?)
It might be helpful to create a little utility to let people who have old logs filter only the topic(-change)s so someone could create a list of old releases' CRCs... anyone out there with older logs?
Btw.: When did the first groups start using CRCs?
Valid CRC's ... where to get them?

well,
i'd say any of the sources you listed besides filename and added sfv is of course a valid one.
@filename and sfv you can never be sure if they weren't self made. so i wouldn't use those without further checking.
@groups/crc
this is one (of many) goals of AniDB. we want subing groups to register their files+crc+data directly @ anidb (someday
).
and provide anidb bots like chii (but quieter, i.e. everything @query) to all interested subing group irc channels.
but i guess if every group would put up crc values for all their releases on their hp that would also help us a lot.
btw. has anyone ever asked any subbing group what they think about anidb? or rather do they even know it? might they maybe not even have heard of ed2k/overnet?

If there is only one file listed for a particular group for an episode, most likely either nobody looked for or could find a CRC source that was "official", so there is no way of checking it properly.Scitz_0 wrote:if a file in the database dosent say/show that it has an offical crc does that mean it could be a corrupt file in the database or that they havent supplied a crc?
If there are more than one files listed for that group for that episode, then one of them is most likely corrupt (although in some cases it is difficult to figure out which, I have gotten some files from an "official" BT source that ended up being the corrupt version).
