Why not try some stuff from before 2000, like Slayers, Escaflowne, Utena, Fushigi Yuugi, Trigun, Outlaw Star...sure, the art isn't pretty modern CG, but that doesn't mean the stories and characters are any worse than what's out there today.

I doubt anyone else will release fansubs of it, you'll have to wait until the R1 DVDs or the rips thereof come out, which will be quite awhile since the first DVD of season 1 just came out this week.
