[DISCUSS] Files: Unknown Status

I found a topic about the generic file status, here:

http://www.anidb.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5340

Which since it was in the archive, I wanted to pose a thought. The 'unknown' icon is semi-misleading. If a person picks a further option such as "on dvd" "on vhs" ... the status really isn't "unknown". Granted this is just a technicality ... however, if the DVD, and TV status is displayed on the actual Anime page ... why wouldn't it be displayed on the mylist page?

In the other forum topic, I don't agree with the "dvd movie" idea. Though I think that there should be some order of priority when an item has an "unknown" status. That if said item is unknown but the additional information is set, then the appropriate icon would replace the unknown icon on their mylist page (priority == dvds, vhs, tv, then theatre). Also, it should be the same for generic files. Whereas instead of replacing the unknown icon, if the file is generic it would replace any and all icons. In other words, if a generic file is marked as "deleted" but they have it as "on dvd" then only the on DVD icon shows. This would only be the case for generic files.

Since I can't imagine a person really has a reason for validly choosing a generic file and marking it as deleted, and yet still having the additional information. If a person chose a generic file, because they don't know which file they downloaded ... I don't see them picking "on dvd", etc for that matter. If they did ... then it still makes sense that it takes priority. I don't think more items should be added to the status. I just think that if the icons already display on the Anime's page, I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be displayed on their mylist as well.

What do you think?

Since when generics are for "because they don't know which file they downloaded"? I know quite well what I watched and anyway I mark it as deleted as it's a join episode for a series I deleted, for example.

How people use generic files are up to them, you may imagine it one way but I can promise you that if you throw a few thousand people at it you'll have a few thousand different ways of doing it.

The priority system treats generic files like other files from what I know. If you intend to make a suggestion for change here you should suggest something a bit more complete than just some quick hacks to fix your personal preferences for generic files.

I said if that's the reason why they picked it ... never said that is what generic files are for, you misread / misinterpreted that. Me personally, I only pick generics for episodes which I never downloaded but have seen in some way or another. If I ever downloaded it ... but can't remember which release it is ... I'll pick the most popular release, in order to avoid using generic files.

Very true @ generic ... so I guess then that merely leaves the validity of "unknown" files. If the file has "on DVD" or "on VHS" the status of "unknown" is factually false, that wasn't an opinionated perception. Also, you incorrectly assume I was suggested something based upon my own preferences. I suggested something based upon another's preference. I don't have a single unknown status file on my mylist. Nor is that my personal preference for generic files ... I'm more than satisfied with using "on CD" and putting it as "on DVD" ... also, the only other time I'd use a generic file is if the episode is combined. In which that case I personally wouldn't want the "deleted" status to be replaced by the "on DVD" status, because that would mean if the other episodes are deleted ... the deleted icon won't show on the parent category, since not all the icons under it are deleted. As such, what I suggested was actually against my preferences.

Which means, I'm not as biased towards this suggestion as it might've appeared to you. I was merely trying to possibly alleviate other's concerns, because I could see what they were saying ... despite the fact that I don't personally have that issue.

Leaving the issue of priority, out of the equation for the sake of simplicity there are two primary things I'm posing. #1 (fact) ... a status of "unknown" is false if in the additional information the status is supplied (i.e. on DVD, on VHS). #2 (perception) ... if the icons are already displayed on the anime page, when the user selects those items. What is the problem with it also being displayed on their mylist?

I think you should wait with spending thought on this until the new animepage arrives cause it'll be kinda different then. There's no ETA but since it's not me working on it anymore it might arrive this year at least.

Cool.

I noticed afterwards as I was checking the feature requests, and modifications listing on the tracker ... that things such as changing "on CD" to "Archived" or something similar ... were pending, as such I figured that there might be other changes which would make this obsolete ... or that I'd have to see what is being done next, first.

I just wanted to pose some ideas to alleviate the other users ... hence the topic. *shrugs*
